Assembled by noted Bay Area percussion maestro Michael “Babatunde” Lea, whose many credits included jazz legends McCoy Tyner and Pharoah Sanders, the seven-piece band Phenomena grew out of the San Francisco Loft Jazz scene of the late ‘70s. Released in 1979, Levels Of Consciousness was the group’s only album for Allen G. Pittman’s El Cerrito-based Theresa label. Besides Lea’s polyrhythmic percussion brilliance, the seven-track album highlights the talents of pianist Musuki, saxophonists Russell Baba and Martin Fiero, guitarist Marvin Boxley, and vocalist Cedric Deombi, as well as cameo appearances from trumpeter Eddie Henderson and trombonist Julian Priester. Creating a joyous, multi-layered blend of styles, the ensemble delivers pulsating jazz (‘Thailand Stick’), heartfelt educational anthems (‘Use Your Hands [A Message To Children]’), fluid Latin grooves (‘Levels Of Consciousness’), mellow R&B-tinged beat ballads (‘Plea From The Soul’), and earthy funk (‘Thang [And I Love It]’ and ‘Merely A Suggestion’).
Levels Of Consciousness is reissued in 2026 as part of the Theresa Jazz Classics series on 180g One-step Pressing Gold Nugget Vinyl LP.
