Originally released on the Theresa label in 1980, Pharoah Sanders’ epic double album, Journey To The One, continued his life’s quest for wisdom, knowledge, and a deeper connection with the divine through music and his tenor saxophone. The album features notable contributions from revered flugelhornist Eddie Henderson, ex-Jazz Messengers pianist John Hicks, and uber drummer Idris Muhammad. Highlights range from swinging hard bop (‘Doktor Pitt’) to oriental soundscapes (‘Kazuko’), shimmering meditations (‘Bedria’), message-laden anthems (‘You’ve Got To Have Freedom’), and Indo fusion experiments (‘Soledad’). Sanders also pays homage to his mentor, John Coltrane, with an interpretation of the saxophonist’s ‘After The Rain.’ A sonic blend of storm and serenity adroitly balancing exploration with tradition, Journey To The One, with its compelling performances, revealed that in 1980, Pharoah Sanders was still very much a regal ruler in the rarified realm of spiritual jazz.
