A pianist of rare sensitivity and narrative depth, Higgins is joined on this landmark collection by two titans of the swing tradition: tenor saxophonist Scott Hamilton and clarinetist/saxophonist Ken Peplowski.

 

Essential Best is a masterclass in melodic jazz, capturing three exceptional soloists in perfect harmony. Hamilton’s inimitable, confident tenor sound—a voice that earned him the "International Jazz Saxophonist of the Year" title at the first Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Awards in 2007—pairs beautifully with Peplowski’s warm, lyrical phrasing. Mixed and mastered by the legendary sound wizard Tetsuo Hara, the album also features a world-class rhythm section including bassists Jay Leonhart and Steve Gilmore, and drummers Joe Ascione, Ben Riley, and Bill Goodwin.
