One of the brightest jewels in US pianist/composer Joe Bonner’s back catalog, 1981’s Impressions Of Copenhagen was his only release for the California-based Theresa label. A pianist whose virtuosic style was a dynamic distillation of Art Tatum’s pre-bop pyrotechnics and McCoy Tyner’s post-bop muscular modalism, Bonner hailed from Thelonious Monk’s hometown, Rocky Mount, North Carolina. He rose to fame in Pharoah Sanders’ group before making his debut for Muse Records in 1974. A trip to Europe, which included a stop-off in Denmark in 1979, was the inspiration behind Impressions Of Copenhagen, recorded in Boulder, Colorado, with Denver-based musicians, bassist Paul Warburton and drummer/producer J. Thomas Tilton. Augmenting his trio with a string quartet, a trombone, and a flute, and overdubbing chimes, Bonner offers six memorable selections. They range from the festive title tune and elegant jazz waltz, ‘The Northstar,’ to the Latin-tinged ‘I’ll Say No This Time.’ The pianist also offers interpretations of noted jazz composer Cal Massey’s ‘Quiet Dawn’ and a stunning rendition of Billy Strayhorn’s immortal ballad ‘Lush Life.’
Impressions of Copenhagen is reissued in 2026 as part of the Theresa Jazz Classics series on 180g One-step Pressing Ocean Blue Vinyl LP.
